Review: Saga Volume 2

For some reason volume 2 of Saga is the only one I own physically. I must have given the first volume away sometime, but who's to say, I first read it years ago now. I'm not sure if I even ever read volume 2, as a lot of it was a surprise to me, but given how bad my memory is, that isn't saying much…

Volume 2 is a step up from volume 1 for me. Volume 1 was a great introduction and prologue to the series, but things really start to pick up and get going with this one. So let's get into it!

Spoiler chat

Volume 2 is basically a 'meet the parents' type episode in a romantic tv show, just set in the backdrop of war and destruction (of course).

Alana spends a lot of time with Marko's dad, Barr. At first there is a lot of tension and anger expressed between the two of them, but they actually come around pretty quick and form an unexpected bond. Turns out Barr is dying, so that no doubt had an effect on his perspective. It seems like he truly cares about Alana and Marko’s daughter, Hazel, and wants the best for her, even if she is a crossbreed. Not only that, but Barr also seems to see how much Alana loves Marko and understands all the pain that comes along with it. It was really quite wholesome and nice seeing these 2 connect like this.

Marko is split off with his Mum, searching for Izabel (who his mum just obliterated to god knows where). The time spent with these two is much less wholesome lmao. They're busy fighting this big balled baby beast (I don't even know) and are arguing the entire time about Marko and Alana's relationship.

Big Balled Beast

Honestly, Marko's mum sucks... She's so mean to Alana and doesn't even know her. I wish she ended up dead, instead of Marko's father. There, I said it. I guess, his mum is an example of how much hatred there is between the Horns and the Wings. I feel like I still don't fully understand the war... Although, it does seem to have been going on for just about forever, so I guess there's no wonder they all got their panties in a twist about these runaway lovers.

Speaking of runaway lovers, we get some flashbacks for their first meeting and it's as cute as you'd think it'll be.

Well, in a Marko and Alana kind of way... It's interesting how they first connected, with Alana secretly reading this romance book to Marko. This book by D. Oswald Heist, seems to symbolise a lot and have a big significance to the plot. Especially, as by the end of this volume everyone is at the author’s house. It's always interesting when there's a piece of art that can be viewed as a politically charged protest, or absolute trash. I feel like, in this case, the author knew what he was doing, and wanted to put his take on the absurdity of this war out there in an unsuspecting safe way.

Also, they are trying to make Marko hot and have me fancy him and it's working... God damn it.

Keep reading, I shall...

The will’s storyline takes an interesting turn. He manages to save this slave girl from this sex planet, but with the help of Marko’s ex, Gwendolyn.

Now, I don’t know the ins and outs of what her beef with Marko is, but she seems to want him, Alana and Hazel dead if it comes down to it. Heck, she even fired a missile at them all, so who knows what she’s capable of. Is it bad that I’m lowkey rooting for her? She’s just a badass, I can’t wait to see what else she brings. I can see her taking Marko and Alana’s side in the future though. I can’t see her spending the entire series tracking them down, I feel like she will come around and fight for our favourite runaway family eventually.

I can also see The Will taking this approach. He seems lost and doesn’t really know what he wants. I think by saving this slave girl, he is trying to figure out what his morals are and what he stands for. This could eventually lead to him also protecting Hazel in the future. Especially as he will no doubt have a soft spot for the crossbred child, given how he was fucking The Stalk… I thought she was back from the dead for a second, which I was excited about actually. I really like her character design, but alas... It was all a dream...

I am very happy to see Izabel return though! I thought that we had seen the last of our snarky little ghost but here she is, living it up! Well, not quite living, but yanno...

I love it when we get a little cameo of a character just living his day to day life in this bizarre world. Like this agent, no doubt just trying to earn his coin. I don’t know. It just makes me smile, and really opens the world up and allows us to see how the world functions at large.

Overall, this volume has picked up the pace and really got the wheels turning. I love how frequently different character perspectives intersect with one another and look forward to seeing what happens next.
